Also known as: Simple Network Management Protocol

Following adds this technology to your private workspace so related learning is easier to organise and revisit.

Technology explained

What is SNMP?

Simple Network Management Protocol is used to monitor and manage networked devices through structured management information. This profile connects the concept to KBY's practical engineering guidance.

Managers query or receive notifications from agents using object identifiers defined in MIBs. SNMPv3 adds authentication and encryption; earlier community-string versions need compensating network controls and should not be treated as secure credentials.

Primary purpose

Collect device telemetry and perform bounded management operations across networks.

Typical environments
Enterprise NetworksData Centers
Typical use cases
  • Network device monitoring
  • Bandwidth usage tracking
  • Hardware fault alerting
